Biped Character Setup

3D character rigging is the art of creating a digital skeleton and control system for a 3D character model, enabling it to move, emote, and interact within a virtual world. As a freelance 3D character rigger, my primary objective is to breathe life into static character models by building a complex framework of interconnected joints, controls, and expressions.

My work begins with a thorough understanding of the character’s design, its intended movements, and the requirements of the animation project. Using specialized software, I meticulously place joints at key points on the character’s body, emulating the articulation of a human or creature. These joints serve as the character’s “bones,” determining how it can bend, twist, and move in a realistic and expressive manner.

Once the skeleton is in place, I create a network of controls, sliders, and deformers that allow for intuitive manipulation of the character’s movements. This includes facial controls for expressions, limb controls for walking, running, and interacting, and specialized controls for unique character features, such as wings or tails. The goal is to provide animators with a user-friendly interface to pose and animate the character seamlessly.
